The final of the women’s 100m freestyle transpired tonight in Lublin, Poland, with Dutch maestro Marrit Steenbergen stealing the show en route to gold.
The 25-year-old Olympian threw down a blistering swim of 50.42 to establish a new European Record as she topped the podium for the second time in the session. She earlier won the women’s 200m IM in a European Record of 2:01.83.
Behind Steenbergen tonight in this freestyle race were Beryl Gastaldello of France and Sara Curtis of Italy who each registered their own national record for respective silver and bronze.
As for 30-year-old veteran Gastaldello, the Olympian stopped the clock at 50.60 to score a new national benchmark, overtaking the former standard of 50.63 she produced when earning silver at last year’s World Championships.
Tonight, Gastaldello split 24.55/26.05 for runner-up honors, checking in as the 7th-fastest performer in history.
Bagging the bronze was 19-year-old Curtis of the University of Virginia. Curtis registered 51.26 to take down the 51.29 she logged during the semi-finals here in Poland.
Prior to that, Olympic icon Federica Pellegrini held the Italian mark with the 52.10 put up in 2019.
19-year-old Curtis has already been on fire this week, most notably splitting a 22.71 to anchor Italy’s mixed 4×50 free relay to a World Record as the team touched in a 1:27.26. Only one other woman, Kasia Wasick of Poland who split a 22.95, swam a sub-23 second split.
