Sydney Sweeney is gearing up for another major cinematic moment. Hot off the buzz surrounding her new film Christy at AFI Fest, the actress is set to headline That Man From Rio, a reimagining of the 1964 French adventure classic. The project is in development with Apple Original Films and will be directed by none other than Justin Lin, best known for his blockbuster work on the Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6 films.
Sydney Sweeney’s new adventurer revival will attract some A-list power
The film will offer a fresh, modern spin on That Man From Rio, which originally starred Jean-Paul Belmondo and Françoise Dorléac. In the 1964 adventure comedy, a soldier on leave finds himself racing to save his kidnapped girlfriend, leading to a whirlwind journey through Rio de Janeiro. Beloved by generations of filmmakers, the film has often been cited by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas as a major inspiration for the creation of Raiders of the Lost Ark and its iconic hero, Indiana Jones.
Sweeney will not only star in the new adaptation but also serve as an executive producer, solidifying her growing presence as both a leading lady and a creative force behind the camera. Lin will produce the film through his Perfect Storm Entertainment banner, with Oscar nominee Kevin Walsh producing through The Walsh Company. Chase Palmer, known for co-writing It, penned the script.
For Walsh, the project is a personal one. He had been pursuing the rights to the film for years as a longtime fan of the original. Once the rights were secured, Lin and Sweeney quickly signed on, recognizing the potential for a big, crowd-pleasing adventure. Industry insiders say the male lead opposite Sweeney is expected to attract significant A-list interest.
This project also continues the growing collaboration between Apple Original Films and Sweeney. The actress stars in Echo Valley, a dramatic thriller alongside Julianne Moore, which is currently streaming on Apple TV+. She previously worked with Walsh on the same film, and their creative synergy appears to be thriving.
Walsh’s producing slate includes acclaimed and upcoming Apple titles such as Being Heumann from Oscar winner Siân Heder, The Instigators, and Napoleon from Ridley Scott.
With its blend of nostalgic source material, modern star power, and an action-proven director, That Man From Rio is shaping up to be a major cinematic event.
