LARQ Movement PureVis: Editor’s choice

You might recognize the world’s first self-cleaning water bottle from its viral moment on Shark Tank, but we personally stumbled upon LARQ’s genius in New York in 2020, and it hasn’t left our side since.

Its unassuming, minimalist lines cleverly hide the fact that inside is a powerful purifying system. The LARQ Bottle uses nontoxic built-in UV-C LED lights in the lid to unleash its PureVis™ technology, which eliminates up to 99% of bio-contaminants.

It sterilizes the water on demand—completing a full clean in a lightning-fast 60 seconds—and automatically self-cleans every two hours, guaranteeing you safe drinking water no matter where your day takes you. This technology instantly reassures any germaphobic concerns we’ve ever had about reusable bottles—stinky odors and bacterial buildup, no more!

The LARQ Bottle Movement PureVis™ is a lightweight, single-walled stainless steel option—perfectly suited for outdoor adventures, hitting the gym, or whatever moves you.

A note on chill: The Movement version is not insulated and is available in 24 oz and 32 oz. For those who prefer a temperature lock, opt for the LARQ PureVis which keeps water cold for up to 24 hours or hot for 12 hours.

Charge your LARQ bottle only once a month. It’s a true travel companion that gives you peace of mind with every sip. We wrote an in-depth LARQ water bottle review if you want to see exactly how the technology works.

How to select the right water bottle for you

If you’re looking for a serious water bottle to help improve your life with hydration, you need the right tool for the task. Selecting features carefully can make the difference between a water bottle that supports your life, and a water bottle that stays on the shelf.

Material

Water bottles are generally made of plastic, stainless steel, or glass.

Plastic water bottles: Plastic has the advantage of being lightweight and almost infinitely durable; you can drop a plastic water bottle without a dent or a crack.

However, some types of plastic can make the water inside taste odd, and you typically don’t want to let plastic bottles get very hot. Even BPA-free plastics can still leach potentially harmful chemicals into your water so if you prefer your water pure and chemical-free, you may want to skip it.

Glass water bottles: Glass is seen by many as the purest option, as there’s zero chance of plastic leaching chemicals into your water. Glass is often dishwasher-safe, but other types of bottles–particularly their caps!–won’t be. There also won’t be any metallic or plastic aftertaste.  It’s clean, flavor-neutral, and easy to wash. But glass can be heavy, fragile, and pricey—better for desk duty than rugged adventures.

Stainless steel water bottles: Durable, temperature-retaining, and endlessly recyclable. Double-walled, vacuum-insulated steel bottles keep drinks at the perfect temperature all day and stand up to just about anything. They might pick up a dent or two, but that’s part of their charm—and their eco-friendly durability makes them a favorite for good reason.

Insulation

If you’re spending long hours away from a refill station or baking under the sun, an insulated water bottle is your hydration hero. Designed to keep your drink cold or warm for hours, these bottles typically use double-walled construction that also prevents condensation. Stainless steel is the gold standard for insulation.

Portability

A great water bottle isn’t great unless it goes where you go. It should slip easily into your backpack’s bottle pocket, snuggle next to your laptop in your work tote, or have a handle that makes carrying it a no-brainer. Whether you’re hopping between meetings, flights, or hiking trails, the best water bottle is the one that actually fits your life.

Size

When choosing a bottle size, start by thinking about your typical activities and hydration goals. Smaller bottles are ultra-portable but tend to empty quickly, while larger ones can be excessively tall or awkwardly bulky.

The sweet spot? After years of testing dozens of water bottles, we’re convinced that 20 to 25 oz ( 600 – 750 ml) is the magic range.

Many people (us included) keep a few bottles in rotation—one for workouts, one for commuting, and another for outdoor adventures.

Cap style

Flip, twist, or sip—your cap says a lot about how (and where) you hydrate. Screw-on caps are the classic choice for leak-free peace of mind, especially when tossing your bottle into a bag. The trade-off? They can be a bit clunky mid-workout or while driving. Flip-tops and straw lids make sipping effortless but can leak if tipped or tossed around. Think about where your bottle spends most of its time: upright on your desk, wedged in a car cup holder, or bouncing in a backpack. Whatever your routine, there’s a lid that fits your lifestyle.

Final thoughts

When narrowing down your next bottle, start with your priorities: taste, portability, durability, ease of cleaning, and eco-friendliness. Once you know what matters most, you’ll find a bottle that fits your rhythm—and keeps you hydrated wherever life takes you.
