An additional 14 performances were worthy of making the cut for this year’s European Short Course Championships as day two of the 2025 Dutch Qualifiers unfolded from Rotterdam.
The men’s 50m freestyle final captured three of those swims, led by Olympian Thom de Boer who fired off a winning time of 21.31 for the gold.
The 33-year-old veteran held off teammate Kenzo Simons who was next to the wall only a hair behind in 21.34 while Brandon van den Berg collected 3rd place with a Lublin, Poland-worthy result of 21.37 in the tight affair. Van den Berg was the 100m free winner and SC Euros qualifier from night one.
De Boer ranks as the #2 Dutch performer of all-time in the splash n’ dash, with his best-ever outing of 20.78 sitting only behind national record holder Nyls Korstanje‘s top time of 20.63 from last year’s Short Course World Championships.
As we reported in our preview, 26-year-old Korstanje opted out of this competition, bypassing his opportunity to qualify for Poland, in order to tend to a back injury and focus on the next long course season.
The final of the women’s edition of the 50m free also brought about a trio of SC Euros qualifiers, led by 27-year-old Valerie van Roon.
Van Roon produced a gold medal-worthy outing of 23.99, just off her career-swiftest mark of 23.91 from 2023 to rank just inside the top 10 Dutch performers of all time.
Milou van Wijk followed up her 100m freestyle victory from night one with a silver in this shorter sprint, hitting 24.19. Tessa Giele also made the grade with a bronze medal-earning time of 24.20, her third SC Euros qualification after making the grade already in the 50m fly and 50m breast.
Imani de Jong led the women’s 400m free field, posting a time of 4:05.26 to clear the Short Course European Championships standard of 4:06.95 needed for Poland.
Runner-up Marte Hieke van der Kamp touched in 4:08.54 to also qualify, adding this race to the 800m free in which she already qualified on night one. Her time dipped under the QT of 4:10.65 for swimmers under 23 years of age. Van der Kamp already earned SC Euros qualification in the 800m free.
Siri Vanderlinden was the 3rd-place 400m free finisher last evening, logging 4:13.90.
The top three finishers in the women’s 100m backstroke all dipped under the minute threshold last night, led by speedster Maaike de Waard.
The 29-year-old posted 56.72 to easily defeat the field and get to the wall over two seconds ahead of her competitors.
Visiting Scottish ace Katie Shanahan reaped silver in 59.14 and Lotte Hosper rounded out the podium in 59.17.
De Waard ranks as the 2nd-best Dutch performer of all time in this event, owning a PB of 55.86 from the 2021 edition of the Short Course European Championships. Her winning effort of 56.72 handily dipped under the 58.08 QT, adding this event to the 50m fly in which she qualified on night one.
Although visiting Scottish national record holder Keanna MacInnes was too quick to catch in the women’s 200m fly, clocking 2:10.77, runner-up Evy Rozeboom of the host nation hit a time good enough to qualify for Poland.
Rozeboom turned in a time of 2:09.64 to get the job done in the head-to-head race, which only included these two racers. Rozeboom’s effort dipped under the 2:10.78 threshold for 23-and-under swimmers.
Finally, two-time Olympic silver medalist Arno Kamminga dove in for the men’s 100m breaststroke.
The 30-year-old who now trains under Tom Rushton in Hong Kong put up a mark of 57.31 to clear the field by well over a second and beat the QT of 57.63.
Koen de Groot notched 57.77 as the runner-up, getting under the 23-and-under QT of 58.49 and Jason van den Berg put up 58.66 to bag the bronze. De Groot already qualified for Poland in the 50m breast.
Kamminga saw all three of his Dutch short course national records bite the dust over the course of the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup, all at the hands of newly-minted 200m breast World Record holder Caspar Corbeau.
Additional Notes
- Visiting British Olympic champion Duncan Scott got the job done in the men’s 400m free, topping the podium in 3:42.43. That kept Tiago Fonseca Gomes of the host nation at bay, with Gomes logging 3:43.75 to pair this event with his 800m free from last night for a two-event Poland lineup. Austin Namesnik rounded out the top three finishers in 3:51.77. Scott is the British national record holder in this event, courtesy of the monster 3:34.46 he notched at the Singapore stop of the 2024 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup.
- Thomas Jansen was the top men’s 400m IM performer in 4:07.41 to qualify for SC Euros and get the edge over 200m free Olympic champion Tom Dean of Great Britain. Dean settled for silver in 4:13.15 and Sven Klink secured bronze in 4:19.18 last night. Jansen’s effort established a new personal best in this event, overtaking the 4:07.88 the 24-year-old put on the books during the 2022 World Cup to check in as the #3 Dutch performer of all time. Dean’s PB remains at the 4:02.53 nabbed during the 2020 International Swimming League (ISL) series.
